Disposables Diapers for Babies

Eco-Friendly Diapers

Hi Friends,

I’m still your girl, Treasure, and it’s been a long journey for me. After raising three (3) amazing cuties, I learned so much about diapering and diapers, so I want to share this piece here.

Okay, First Things First,

Before babies are born, parents prepare their rooms, clothes, skincare essentials, and one of the most important, diapers!

Did you know your baby’s skin is 20% thinner than an adult’s, and the wrong diaper and everything in-between can seriously harm your baby?

Disposable diapers are pretty helpful in parenting, and almost all parents in the world use them for their kids, but is your choice of diapers safe?

Most parents are unaware of the adverse effects of harmful diapers being in contact with a baby’s reproductive organs 24 hours a day for more than two years and the long-term effects it causes on the surroundings.

Do you know how many diapers the average child uses before potty training?

According to studies, the average child will use about 6,000 to 7,000 diapers before potty training!

WOW! that’s huge!

Choosing the right diaper for your little one can be tricky, especially when you’re not well informed.

Do you know the choices parents and caregivers are often left with?

Either the non-eco-friendly (ordinary diapers), which can be notoriously harmful to babies, or eco-friendly diapers.

Okay, I think I’m moving too fast. Let me hit my brake now and take it step by step.

Non- Eco-Friendly Diapers (ordinary diapers)

Ordinary diapers are everywhere, virtually in all markets in Africa. But unfortunately, each layer of such diapers can contain chemicals you’d rather not have in direct contact with your baby’s sensitive skin.

Studies have shown that non-eco-friendly diapers usually comprise polymers, adhesives, plastics, and scented chemicals which are critical factors for everything from chronic diaper rash, respiratory problems like asthma, and male infertility even to testicular cancer.

But, Why would anyone use diapers that could harm their baby?

Oops! Pardon me; just thinking out loud.

Well, I guess many people do not know that manufacturers use volatile chemicals that can affect babies immediately or in their latter years to make these diapers. In addition, such diapers contain a plethora of petroleum products that will never wholly degrade or slowly degrade in landfills to produce toxic chemicals into the air, water, and soil, harming flora and fauna.

Studies indicate that non-eco-friendly diapers in landfills can take up to 500 years to degrade, creating methane and other toxic gasses that also end up in the ecosystem.

Thankfully, with the environmental changes happening so rapidly, and thanks to the awareness campaigns by different organizations around ESG and ecological safety, trends are changing, and parents are more watchful now in most developed and developing countries worldwide. As a result, they are moving on to the use of eco-friendly diapers.

Eco-Friendly Diapers (Premium Diapers)

Eco-Friendly diapers are FSC certified and breathable. They are made with natural plant-based materials instead of petroleum-based materials, and the absorbent layer is made with biodegradable cellulose fluff pulp.

Benefits of using eco-friendly diapers

  • Gentle on baby’s skin.
  • Prevents Leaks and Rashes due to high absorbency and natural materials.
  • Suitable for mother nature.

Disadvantages of eco-friendly diapers

  •  Not available in all countries of the world.
  • A bit more expensive but has an excellent value for the cost.

My Point

Diapers are a basic need for parenting in today’s world because they are beneficial. Unfortunately, ordinary/non-eco-friendly diapers contain various chemicals that are harmful and take a long time to degrade. In contrast, eco-friendly diapers are toxic-free and good for the environment. The only downside of eco-friendly diapers is that they are not readily available in all countries or places worldwide. Therefore, consider yourself and your little one LUCKY if you have it in your territory.

As a health and safety specialist, my candid advice to parents and caregivers:

Don’t go for ordinary diaper brands. They are cheaper but toxic!

“Never forget that after exposure to a potential carcinogen, the main issue (cancer) usually starts between 15-40 years later. So I hope this saves someone.”
