Welcome to the Military

The Nigerian Military Spouse

Military life is a life of sacrifice for soldiers and their families. I’ve been married to a man in the army for nearly 14 years, and I can categorically tell you that life in the military can be weird sometimes but….. it’s always worth it. Military life can mold you in ways you weren’t anticipating, and it’s pretty okay. I genuinely believe that military life has made me a better person, and I like… like it.

You Know You’re Married to Someone in the Military When You;

  • Have a plan, then a new plan, then the first plan, then a brand new plan, only to go back to the second plan….arghhh!!
  • Fight an inner battle trying to accept the path your spouse has chosen ( Disclaimer, I’m 100% a patriotI support my soldier).
  • Get accustomed to putting on a smile and being wonderfully friendly to people your spouse tells you to be pleasant to, even when you know they are unpleasant….unbelievable!
  • Never get used to your lifestyle, but you get through it.
  • Aren’t afraid to try new things; take chances to make your life the best possible.
  • Fit your work around your life instead of life around your work.
  • Aren’t afraid to make new friends…I’ve made some extraordinary friends… exceptional people!
  • Know and address all his colleagues by their last names.
  • Feel the military comes first (no..no, you’re always first in his heart).
  • Know the true meaning of “Hurry up and Wait.”
  • Do so well in solo parenting and still maintain your sanity.
  • Tell your spouse, “Don’t worry about me; I got this.”
  • Don’t legitimately know when you’re going to see your spouse again.
  • Constantly check your phone, hoping to get that “one call” worth so much.
  • Jump out of the shower so you don’t “miss” the call.
  • Know that even a phone call that lasts just a few minutes can make your day.
  • Keep track of time in two different time zones.
  • Choose your spouse over sleep.
  • Wake up to good morning text, and don’t sleep until you get a good night text.
  • Feel every mile between you and your spouse.
  • Hear your phone ring in the middle of the night and instantly know who it is.
  • Think weeks or months in advance about what to wear when your spouse returns…Who else is on this ride???
  • Hear how many months, weeks, or days you have left until you’re together again!
  • Love, laugh, hope, and pray until your spouse returns home.
  • Get gifts from exotic places…I love gifts!
  • Experience a love and life that civilians won’t ever get to experience.
  • Have a spouse who knows how to iron… hahaha.
  • Tell him to shut up and kiss you, and he responds with a military “Yes, ma’am“….. hahaha.

Anyone could be married to a service member if they wanted to because it doesn’t take a specific type of person to be a military spouse. It only takes a strong heart to love someone in the military. This can be difficult to explain unless you’re living it.

The bottom line???

To the new military spouses, MILITARY LIFE WILL CHANGE YOU. If it hasn’t, just wait….it will, but you’ll also get familiar with it quickly and grow through it.

To you reading this,

I’m glad you found me! This military life is a life of sacrifice for soldiers and their families. Thank a military spouse today. Thank me today for giving love and support to a man that signed up to put his life on the line for our nation.

I’ll keep telling you some things you don’t hear about Nigerian military life. Thanks, and keep stopping by for great and undiluted stories!

Grazie mille!
